Relatively short novel of 150 pages, won Pulitzer prize. A bridge collapses in Peru and kills 5 people, and a priest tries to piece together the lives of the victims and determine why they were chosen to die. They include an old woman whose daughter left for Spain, a twin brother grieving for the death of his twin, an uncle whose adopted daughter no longer respects him. All seem to be linked in some way to actress Camila Perichole. In the end, however, the priest fails to find any pattern in those who died and those who lived, and suggests that there is no higher power, and we should just enjoy our time on earth.
